Religion and culture and peacebuidling

Religion and culture and peacebuidling
Dr. Govind Prasad Thapa

'International Conference on Religion and Culture in Conflict and Peace: Reconciliation and Peacebuilding in South Asia' held in Lumbini of Nepal in March 26-27, 2019. was held in Lumbini of Nepal. Religion is contested issue. Quite often, it is abused for instigating hatred and provocation of war in modern societies. At the same time religion and cultural practices could be used to promote peace and harmony in the world. With the views of these belief and faith several eminent scholars highlighted on the issues of maintaining peace and harmony in the world through the medium of religion and culture in the two-day 'International Conference on Religion and Culture in Conflict and Peace: Reconciliation and Peacebuilding in South Asia' held in Lumbini of Nepal in March 26-27, 2019.
Some of my observations were:
Nepal suffered from the brunt of the Maoist insurgency for one decade: 1996-2006. The rebellion was launched by the CPN-M on 13 February 1996 with the main aim of overthrowing the Nepalese monarchy and establishing a People's Republic. The bloody civil war ended with the Comprehensive Peace Accord signed on 21 November 2006. Seventeen thousands were killed and hundreds of people were injured and disappeared. Nepal had failed to prevent and counter the insurgency due to the internal politics of king, political parties and also, to some extent, due to the interagency rivalry among the security agencies of Nepal. These are the bizarre facts drawn in the autobiography of retired IGP Achyut Krishna Kharel. Even after the truce and end of the decade-long insurgency, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission has failed to investigate wartime killings, torture and forced disappearances and delivering justice to victims of war has also failed so far. The government has recently adopted 'no-compromise-with-terrorist-group' attitude against Biplab-led group and have started carrying out surveillance on its activities and taking action against those found involved in it. There are voices that such strategy could invite more confrontation similar to the nature of insurgency.
It is my understanding that super powers around the world are responsible for escalating the conflicts globally. As a consequence, the spill-over of conflicts are affecting the socio-economic development of these countries.
Music is the universal language of all living beings including animals, insects and plants. India and Pakistan must resolve the Jammu and Kashmir issue permanently. I proposed for the appeal not only to the governments of India and Pakistan only to resolve the issues of Jammu and Kashmir permanently but also to the governments of all the countries in the world to end all kinds of conflicts in the globe.
Spirituality is the best answer for the durable peace in the world. There is a need for education system for the physical, mental and spiritual health of human beings in order to have lasting peace in the world.
